It was October 31, 1979, Disco dominated the airwaves when Helen, intent on a theatre career at Cal State Long Beach, did her first radio work on student station, KSUL. She soon volunteered at KLON for her brother, Ken, who was the program director there, located THEN on the campus of Long Beach City College. It was that Halloween that Helen was hired full-time at 88.1 FM. She’s still there today, holding down the afternoons, in front of the same microphone she shared with her predecessor, Chuck Niles. Helen handled the morning show while the legendary Niles held down afternoons on 88.1 F.M.
She hosted a weekly 3-hour interview program, “The Artist’s Corner,” as well as handling Music Director chores for K-LON.
Through the 1990’s Helen was Program Director for “Eurojazz,” a jazz satellite service to the Netherlands. She moved with Eurojazz to London before returning to the States to host again on 88.1.
In addition to numerous hosting and emcee duties at Los Angeles area jazz spots and festival events, Helen is an accomplished jazz lecturer and writer, for both domestic and international publications.
She celebrates her 30th anniversary at 88.1 F.M. on Halloween night, 2009.
