Featured Artist: RIckey Woodard 2.0

We named this edition of the show Rickey 2.0. It's his second time in 12 months that Rickey sat in with us in studio. When you are expecting someone as prolific as Rickey, you are certain he's got another CD under his arm, and once again he did not disappoint. This CD is titled "Pineapple Express", after Rickey's not-so-secret passion, pineapple juice. Rickey even admitted to having had a glass before heading off to join us studio.

When old pals like Helen and Rickey get together, the laughter in-studio gets contagious. Listen for Producer Danny's laugh as Rickey's candor cracks up everyone within the sound of his voice. Rickey takes us through six tracks from the new CD and provides the details behind not only his "all original songs" selection for this collection, but the motives behind his chance to get BEHIND the microphone for a turn at vocals.

Featured Artist: ROY MCCURDY

He started dragging his drum kits in and out of the subways in New York City in the late 1950’s and though he is off public transportation these days, Roy McCurdy is still sitting behind a drum kit somewhere in the world today! His latest collaboration resulted in a new CD for Jon Mayer, “Nightscapes”. In this show, we’ll hear a sample, as well as some classic Cannonball Adderly, for whom Roy sat with for over a decade. Memories of his days with Sonny Rollins, the Jazz Brothers – Chuck and Gap Mangione and Cannonball make for a terrific interview from this legendary drummer.

Recent Artist: CHARLIE SHOEMAKE

In January of 2009, there was a Cambria Jazz Festival held during the Martin Luther King week-end. At the conclusion of the festival (which was held at the veterans hall) the scene shifted over to the Hamlet restaurant, home of the long running famous jazz artist series. This concluding event featured series producer Charlie Shoemake playing a tribute to his old boss George Shearing by re-creating the famous sound of the classic Quintet with an assembly of all star players performing some of the groups timeless songs. The result was a huge success with turn away crowds. Word of the performance spread and soon after, the famed management company International Ventures Inc. (the representatives of Sir George Shearing) and even Sir George himself felt that the Quintet sound should be made available again world wide, now under the direction of Charlie Shoemake. Thus, "The New Sounds Of Shearing" was born. The group features some of America's top level artists. Besides, the leader Charlie Shoemake, on vibraphone, the other members include Terry Trotter, piano, Ron Anthony, guitar, Luther Hughes, bass, and Colin Bailey, drums, a veritable who's who of American jazz

Recent Artist: SALLY KELLERMAN
SALLY KELLERMAN: You certainly know Oscar-nominated actress side of the original “Hot Lips Houlihan” from the Robert Altman motion picture, “M*A*S*H”. This week, the “Sittin In” mobile studio set up in Sally’s living room in the hills above Hollywood, Californa for a taste of her new jazz CD, “Sally."

Sally is an old friend, and, as old friends will do, she opens up to Helen and you hear stories about being signed to Verve Records, hanging with Jack Nicholson, making movies, and working with Cris Caswell and Producer Val Garay making her self-titled compact disc. We even play a few tracks on the show.

Find out more about “Sally” at sallykellerman.com.
Recent Artist: MATT JOHNSON
  image 1

MATT JOHNSON dropped by the “Sittin In” studio with something we hadn’t seen in a long time—a vinyl disc! It was a collector’s copy of an album he’d made over 20 years ago and copies of it were long gone. A fan in Japan sent him a copy of “The Palm Springs Yacht Club” on the actual vinyl, and YOU KNOW we were quick to digitize it so that we could offer it to you. It’s part of an energetic interview with a terrific drummer and a fantastic story-teller.

Recent Artist: RICKY WOODARD

There was little chance Rickey Woodard would escape a musical future given his Nashville, Tennesee roots.  Born into a big family where Dad taught music to all the Woodard kids, any family member who was able to played in the family band. Roadhouses and clubs were a workshop for Rickey’s musical education with liberal lessons in the blues and R&B,  But not to worry,   “I’m a die hard jazz fan!” claims Rickey.

Graduating as a proud “Tiger” from Tennessee State University, Rickey ventured out to Los Angeles and then back to Nashville a few times, but Nashville was where he was staying when he received the call to join the Ray Charles band.  He became a permanent member just shy of his 30th birthday, touring the world with the Band for over 7 years.

He relocated to Los Angeles in 1988 where he became a popular sideman for Concord Records, the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and  Frank Capp’s Juggernaut Big Band, to name only a few of his associations.

Rickey plays alto, tenor and soprano saxophone as well as clarinet, flute and guitar and when he’s not playing, he’s singing.
